The Mountain Goats

So I'm not even going to pretend I have all this guy's ever put out. He's released 16 LPs over his career and probably a billion eps and 7"s and appeared on two billion compilation albums. I will however upload what I recommend you guys check out. His first ten albums were mostly him playing acoustic guitar into a four-track boombox, so as good as the songs are, they sound like shit. Since he's signed to a major label he got himself a full band and worked on filling out his sound. Shit is excellent. I have listed his six full-band albums in the order that I recommend them. First is my favorite and on down the line. They're all super-fantastic though.

Portugal. The Man

So if you've never heard of these kids, you really should have paid more attention. A good starting point is either Church Mouth or Satanic Satanist. These guys really don't fit into a genre very easily. Early on they were very electronic, but their modern music sounds more like poppy southern rock. Censored Colors sounds like Reggae. Just download some and try it out.

Efterklang - Performing Parades (2009)

Ok, so imagine the biggest sound you can imagine. Now make it bigger. Now add more horns. You might be about half-way to what Efterklang is like. When you take a few brilliant danish vocalists, add in a full band, back it all with some ambient electronics, and make it all sound like the most awe-inspiring moment of every adventure movie you've ever seen, you get this album. It's a live album played with the help of the Danish National Chamber Orchestra. This album is honestly so beautiful that I have problems doing other things while listening to it.

Silver Jews - American Water

When I first heard this album, I responded to it along the lines of, "I hate myself for loving this so much." I don't know what it is, exactly, but I can't get enough of it. Why don't these guys actually sing when they play??? Who cares. It's worth a listen. This genre, I suppose, is known as Lo-Fi. The haunting poetic lyrics, simple riffs, droning voices. Mmm. Delicious.

Damien Judaro - Ghost of David

I seem to be in a weird folk kick lately. Damien Judaro fits my tastes perfectly. The simplicity, the sincerity, everything adds up to equal goodness, here. Maybe it's just the mood I'm in, maybe it's just right.
Enjoy.

Rosa - I Mississippi You

Rosa. I found these folks randomly. This thing is perfect. Folk + Punk and just lovely lyrics. ?They helped usher me into this genre, and I think it's a nice place to start.
